Thrifty Thursday: A New Year

It’s a new year and so start as you mean to go on, by saving money! The Aldi super-six until the 15th of January are little gem lettuce (2), cucumber, savoy cabbage, garlic (4), spring onions and celery. They are all 39p each. They are now doing super six meat offers too, click that link to see those.

There are lots of weight watchers foods in today’s special buys; ideal if you’re just starting a diet. The Bachelor’s slim a soups are 4 for 79p. Sunday’s special buys appear to have a ‘keep warm’ theme and include plush micro fibre blankets.

There is a half price sale at George at Asda, but that didn’t interest me much. I might take a look at the coats in there at some time. The Matalan sale might be worth looking at too. They have a quilted black rucksack half price which might come in handy for my camera gear…

If you’re struggling, because you spent too much over Christmas, then forget the sales. Make a list of what you need to spend money on. Housing, food and keeping warm are the essentials. You might have to pay council tax too. Think about giving up or at least cutting down on luxuries, especially alcohol. If you have a credit card, you might be able to spread the cost of some things until next month. Aldi, doesn’t take credit cards…

Avoid pay-day loans like the plague, they are the start of a very slippery slope.

Look for bargains and try to cook frugal meals. Wear extra clothing to keep warm. Spend extra time in the supermarket and use their heating rather than your own. Cancel newspapers and anything else you can do without. Don’t waste anything. Drive carefully, avoid accelerating too fast or braking too hard. Do eat foods like porridge that is cheap and will help keep you warm. Avoid the expensive and fancy cereals. Do make your own soup and make the most of any leftovers. Don’t even try to keep up with the Joneses in January!

I’m glad to say my thriftiness and frugal life style mean I have more than enough money and no debts. I won’t be spending too much this month though. Saving money is a good habit and gives you some financial security. I will keep a good stock of food in, just in case the weather gets really bad. I can last a couple of weeks if it snows then. Stock up your freezer and food cupboards if you can afford it. Frozen vegetables and canned fruit are useful when you can’t get to the shops. Potatoes are useful. There are so many things you can do with them. Fill the oven with potatoes and add fried sausages for a frugal family meal.
